Today’s Scripture: Luke 9:23
Most people begin following Jesus with expectations.
We hope He will answer our prayers, solve our problems, heal our hurts, or make life better. While God certainly cares about those things, discipleship eventually brings us to a crossroads where our agenda collides with His.
Jesus said, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.”
Those words reveal that following Jesus is more than believing in Him. It involves surrendering our plans, preferences, and priorities to His leadership.
This can be challenging because we naturally want control. We want God to bless our plans rather than asking Him to shape them. Yet true discipleship begins when we trust that His plans are better than our own.
Denying ourselves does not mean losing our identity. It means discovering who we were created to be. It means exchanging temporary pursuits for eternal purpose.
The cross reminds us that following Jesus is not always comfortable. It may require sacrifice, obedience, and trust. But it also leads to life, freedom, and transformation.
Every day presents opportunities to choose whose agenda will lead.
The invitation remains the same:
Follow Him.
PERSONAL REFLECTION
What area of your life are you most tempted to control? Ask God to help you surrender it to His leadership today.
PRAYER
Jesus, I confess how tightly I want to hold control of my own life. Help me deny myself and take up my cross daily. Teach me to trust that Your plans are better than mine, and that surrendering to You is not losing my life but discovering who You created me to be.
